As most privacy-conscious users can probably tell you, surfing the internet without a basic ad blocker is not only unsafe, but can also be extremely frustrating.

While most ads may not necessarily pose a direct threat to your online security, not all ads are. Privacy Badger for Firefox starts to work.

You can think of this cross-browser extension as an ad blocker of sorts, specifically designed to ban so-called spy ads and all the invisible trackers that come with them.

The great thing about this extension is its all-around accessibility. For starters, you can install it directly from the Firefox Add-ons Store with just a few clicks of your mouse.

Once deployed on your computer’s Firefox browser, Privacy Badger works instantly without any type of user intervention from you. In short, it sends a “Do Not Track” header with every request to assess the likelihood of you being tracked and automatically blocks the process.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t use the extension. Click the extension’s icon, and you’ll get a list of all the potential trackers on any given web page. You’ll also notice that each tracker has a dedicated slider.

The extension uses green to show unblocked trackers, yellow to let you know it won’t send referrer cookies to the tracker in question, and red to show which trackers are blocked. Head over to the Options section and you’ll find more extensive settings. Just to give you a basic idea, you can whitelist domains, enable a list of tracking domains, and import or export user data.

All in all, there is no doubt that Privacy Badger for Firefox is a useful tool that should be on par with other extensions. It is most effective against intrusive/aggressive ads and trackers, so it may go a little overboard and even block some useful and harmless elements.

Nonetheless, it provides enough configuration settings to bypass these potential issues.
