Trying to separate the musical elements of a song isn’t the easiest job in the world, and it’s one of the many things that separates a good music producer from a great one. Even if you’re just starting out, trying to sample parts of a track into your new song can be very challenging, and that starts with isolating the vocals and instruments.

In essence, this tool is close to being automated. You first have to find your song, and for that, YouTube integration comes in handy. Once you find the track of your choice, click “Split” and let the software work its magic.

As for the magic, it can take a while to manifest. After clicking “Split” the program will start processing the songs you selected, which may take quite a while depending on your hardware. On our 11th generation i7 machine, mixing a 5-minute song takes just over 10 minutes. Of course, it should be mentioned that this tool also uses a lot of system resources in the process, so plan accordingly.

After completing the separation process, the program will automatically open a folder containing the extracted parts of the songs. Create separate files for all instruments, such as drums and bass and vocals.

It is worth noting that the extracted file size is not insignificant: in our case, a 5-minute song has about 300 MB of data.

StemRoller works reasonably well, although the time it takes for the algorithm to complete its task leaves something to be desired. Still, for those who are patient, the results are more than enough to get the job done, so at least you end up with a good sample.
