Desktop weather apps are often hit or miss because they either don’t provide enough information or are too bloated. If you’re looking for a free, lightweight program that still has an impressive feature set, pallet weather May be just what you need.

An open source application that obtains weather data from Open weather mapwhich features a streamlined design while still providing detailed forecasts and even weather maps.

Tray Weather is very easy to configure, but you need an OpenWeatherMap account to get an API key; it’s free, and you only need to complete this step once. Your location is automatically detected so you don’t have to worry.

Once everything is set up, you can place your mouse cursor over the system tray icon to see the current temperature and weather description in a tooltip. At night, the icon changes to show the current moon phase.

If you want more information, just double-click on the system tray icon. The app will display a complete report including temperature, cloud cover, humidity, pressure and wind speed.

Additionally, you can view the weather forecast for the coming week, which charts and graphs the predicted temperature, humidity, cloud cover, air pressure, and rainfall.

Local temperature, rainfall, cloud cover and wind speed can be viewed on the map in the main user interface. You can select the parameters to analyze and choose between two map types.

Since this feature takes up more memory than the rest of the application, you can also choose to disable it at any time.

Overall, OpenWeatherMap is a relatively simple but very impressive program that has a nice set of features and bundles them into a very intuitive, streamlined UI.
