Speech recognition algorithms combined with artificial intelligence create the possibility of controlling devices using voice commands. This is not uncommon in mobile phones and home assistants, but Network Assistant takes the extra step of letting you interact with browsers like Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge using just your voice.

Regardless of your browser of choice, Web Assist installs easily and adds a new icon to your list of active extensions. While some additional settings are available in the add-on’s main menu, they are quite limited in scope.

When you open a new page in your browser, you will surely notice a red microphone icon in the lower right corner of the window. Click on it to activate speech recognition. Obviously, access to your computer’s microphone is necessary for this extension to work properly.

While Web Assist is listening, you can say “Open help” to access a list of available voice commands. The extension’s help displays the full list of commands with additional notes and comments explaining how they work and what they do.

Web Assist lets you navigate the web and interact with open tabs or other elements on the pages you visit, such as hyperlinks and forms. You can use voice commands to focus on an element, bookmark the currently open page, click the browser’s Back or Forward buttons, reload a page, and more.

Opening pages, creating new tabs or closing tabs, navigating through tabs and pages, controlling video playback are all tasks you can perform using voice commands of Web Assist.

Additionally, when you click on a form, dictation mode is activated, allowing you to initiate a search, for example. Web Assist also allows you to fill in forms.

Web Assist is an interesting plugin that allows you to control your browser using voice commands, giving you a hands-free browsing experience. It is meant to increase your productivity, but you have to take the time to learn all the commands and use them correctly.

However, it is a little cumbersome to use. I found that I had to speak my commands loudly and very clearly for them to be recognized and executed.

Beyond that, while intuitive and basic, remembering all the commands can seem a bit overwhelming. However, being able to get help with just a voice command makes things a little easier.
