The program came about when I was tired of spending too much time searching for programs through my ever-growing Windows start menu, and I also found myself using Windows Run more and more often. Of course, there were already programs like this available, but each of them had their annoyance or lack of features or too ( !! ) nerdy. So I decide to code my own app to get rid of using Windows start menu and Windows run.

Functions

  • Keywords have properties like shortcuts, and you can, for example, drag and drop a shortcut/file/folder/favorite to add it as a keyword.
  • Autocomplete for keywords, file system and history (can also be configured).
  • URL recognition, enter URLs directly (such as www.google.com, mail.google.com, google.com or http://www.google.com).
  • Keywords support parameters. Example “google latest executor” “wiki nirvana”.
  • In addition to keywords, Executor can also optionally and dynamically add matching start menu items, control panel items, and other useful items to the dropdown list/list.
  • Ability to add your own paths to scan for user-defined file extensions.
  • Each keyword can be assigned a hotkey, so Executor can also work like many popular hotkey managers.
  • Keyword control, have one or more open applications for keywords minimized, with administrator access, ensure that only one instance is running of the application and more
  • Can add keyword integration with popular services like GMail, Twitter, GCal, RTM and many others (see forums for guides, tutorials and tips).
  • Optional display icon for current keyword/input.
  • Optional show dropdown box for current keyword/input (autocomplete).
  • Optional drop-down box can be set to auto-open (as windows runs) and show suggestions for auto-completion.
  • Optional list showing matching items.
  • Layout can be customized. Set colors, font, dimensions, position, transparency and more.
  • skin friendly. Supports alpha blending effects and free placement of all elements.
  • Many settings to customize the program as you like.
  • Can be started from a user-defined hotkey.
  • One keyword or text input can launch multiple keywords/urls/programs/documents/files etc. Example one keyword opens three websites and/or programs.
  • Each keyword has properties such as optional group (to organize into groups), customizable icon and other properties.
  • Keyword “find [text]” to use the Windows Instant Search feature or Windows Desktop Search.
  • A number of special commands (such as pause and replace tag with parameter).
  • Optional Windows context menu integration (as another way to easily add new keywords).
  • Optional display title for current input.
  • Can import keywords from the Windows start menu.
  • Can automatically import keywords from a url at startup, allowing you to share keywords between different Executor installations (for example, for collaborative use).
  • Executor has a number settings on how you want it to find the desired element(s). Text can “start with” or “contain text” (substring) or short form detection (eg typing ffox for firefox).
  • All file paths can be auto-completed (even when file path is a parameter) and you can use tab and shift-tab to cycle through the file system path.
  • Keywords to manipulate the current active window (center, resize to specific size, maximize width or height, etc.).
  • Special keywords to list (and open) running applications, text previously copied to the clipboard, and recent documents. Can also remove formatting from clipboard text.
  • Many special keywords such as lock computer, restart, shutdown, standby, turn off screen(s), mute sound, show date/time/week number etc.
  • Shortcut keys for faster navigation.
  • Integrated calculator.
  • Integrated notes, for quick notes etc.
  • Import/export keywords (import can also import directly from a url instead of a file).
  • Ability to override Windows Run hotkey (Win-R).
  • Optional sounds.
  • Integrated Windows context menu (for example when you right-click list items).
  • At startup, a number of keywords/commands can possibly be started.
  • Easily set a simple alarm, timer, stopwatch (with optional warning sound).
  • Pressing enter without valid input will launch the first suggested item (optional).
  • Be able to retrieve text from hidden launched console applications and display text in input or in multiline text.
  • More hidden experimental/minor settings to play with (eg show time/date/other things when idle).
  • Plus more…
  • Free (freeware for oldies) MIT licensed.
  • Free for commercial use (but feel free to donate if you forced your entire organization to use Executor! I’ve put a lot of hours into this :-)).

What is new

  • Calculations made and the result of the calculation can now be added to the history. This is disabled by default, but can be enabled in Settings -> Miscellaneous -> Calculator -> “Add calculation to history”. The reason it is disabled by default is the security concern that calculations can be sensitive data. So it would not be good practice to add these to the history without the user’s knowledge.
