expression Offers you the possibility to rely on the ICU regular expression standard to create a highlighting pattern that will be applied to any text string. Custom patterns take effect in real time, so you can easily experiment with syntax and modify expressions.

Develop regular expression patterns using the NSRegularExpression class

The expression user interface is represented by a window, divided into two main areas: at the top, you can enter expressions, and at the bottom, you must place the text to test the pattern.

Additionally, you can toggle the Reference Surface panel, where you can view metacharacters and operators that you can use when defining new patterns, including non-capturing metacharacters and operators.

For convenience, Expressions uses color codes (blue, pink, and white) to help you distinguish the various elements contained in an expression. Also, to learn more about the syntax and how the NSRegularExpression class works, be sure to visit the Apple Developer Resources site.

Test regular expressions in real-time and easily make necessary adjustments

After you start adding new structures in the appropriate expression panel, the application will start applying rules to the text in the bottom area of the window. The app will highlight terms that alternate between pink and blue backgrounds.

You can easily navigate between the two areas using hotkeys: Command + P to jump to mode, Command + T to switch to text. Also, you can choose to highlight the previous or next group also depending on the keyboard combination.

Expressions come with light and dark interface themes, are case-insensitive, handle multiple lines, and allow spaces and comments.

Try regular expressions without any distractions

Expressions gives you the possibility to create custom highlighting patterns using the ICU regular expression standard and test them on any text string.

The Expressions app works out of the box without any special configuration, and you can even switch to full screen mode to stay focused.
