Mac users are lucky to have a fairly powerful screenshot utility built into macOS. Still, there are always things that can be improved and new features implemented with third-party alternatives.

flame bomb is a very popular open-source screenshot capture application that is deeply customizable and available for macOS, Windows, and Linux. It’s powerful yet easy to use, and has cool features like instant Imgur capture for easy sharing.

Not much different from macOS screenshot utilities

There are two methods of grabbing content from the screen: grabbing a specific area or the entire desktop. Unfortunately, unlike Apple’s screenshot tool, Flameshot cannot capture the contents of specific windows.

Other than that, the two apps work very similarly. You can set Flameshot to remember the last position and size of the capture area, activate it with a hotkey, and save the image to your desktop with one click.

Comments and Imgur uploads

Also, like the built-in utility, this app lets you edit screenshots before saving them. There are many tools at your disposal that allow you to draw, add shapes, write text, blur and pixelate. A full edit history is saved, and you can go back to any step and make adjustments.

When everything is ready, you can save the image locally or upload it directly to Imgur. This feature requires no additional configuration and the URL will be copied to the clipboard for instant sharing.

Customize the appearance and functionality of the application

Interface colors, file naming formats, and keyboard shortcuts can be freely customized, enabling you to shape the application to fit your workflow. The same goes for its behavior and optional features. You can have it work like the default macOS screenshot utility without any trouble.

So, is Flameshot really necessary for macOS users? In most cases, no. It’s a pretty good app, but Apple provides a tool that does pretty much everything Flameshot can do, with the added bonus of allowing you to capture the application window. It does lack instant Imgur uploads and the level of customization this app has, so it’s still a better option for some users.
