GnuCash is a finance app whose purpose is to help you better manage your accounts and personal finances by helping you track your income, expenses, bank accounts, stock portfolio and other business details, keep them together and stay organized.

User Interface

The UI is underwhelming in the visual department, but it’s actually quite functional. You can work in a multi-tab environment or run the utility in command line mode.

Import and export options

You can add your existing financial data from Quicken, MS Money or other programs capable of exporting QIF or OFX files, as well as import/export accounts and transactions from/to CSV file format.

When creating an account, you can select a currency, choose a trading account, enter details about your business such as company name, address, contact person, phone number and email address, and add information about counters i.e. billing, customers , Employees, Jobs, Orders, Vendors, and more.

Supports different accounts for you to choose such as Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Assets, Bank, Cash, Credit Card, Currency, Equity, Expenses, Income, Liabilities, Mutual Funds or Stocks. Additionally, accounts can be edited or deleted.

Transaction Operations and Scheduling Options

GnuCash gives you the freedom to cut, copy, paste, delete or duplicate transactions and set the reconciliation status of transactions.

A smart feature included in the package enables you to set up scheduled transactions by entering a name, frequency, start and end dates, and number of occurrences. Additionally, you can print multiple standard express checks or generate custom check formats.

Business functions and other handy tools

You can register customers, suppliers and employees as well as generate and track invoices and bills by adding information about your business name, address, phone number and other personal details.

Additionally, you can perform searches to find transactional or business related data, create loan repayment plan transactions, record stock splits, track/modify the value of currencies, mutual funds and stocks with the help of the price editor, and calculate compound interest.

Last but not least, the app provides a comprehensive set of reports and graphs at your disposal. You can create general reports that include information about accounts, taxes, and transactions, generate asset and liability reports, and other reports related to income and expenses, and business data. Reports and graphs can be printed or exported to HTML file format.

GnuCash provides a clean and well-organized layout for your business data, but you should take into account that it is CPU and memory intensive, so your system performance may suffer.
