The macOS Dock can be customized, but it will use the same settings regardless of the current display configuration. If you want to change the size or position of the Dock when connected to an external display, or hide it entirely, you’ll have to manually change those settings each time.

HiDock Designed to automate this process based on the monitor being used at any given time. When you connect or disconnect a monitor, your Dock settings will update without any user input.

The app runs in the menu bar, from where you can bring up the settings window. You can customize your preferences for the built-in display, external displays, and multiple displays.

For each of these cases, you can hide or show the Dock, move it to the bottom or sides of the screen, and change its size. The settings can be previewed, and once the application is run, the conversion will be handled automatically.

Works great, with one small limitation

The available settings should be sufficient for whatever display setup you want. The app can be launched at login, and can even be hidden from the menu bar to keep its functionality completely in the background.

One limitation is that HiDock doesn’t give you the same degree of fine-tuning as system settings when it comes to the size of the Dock. There are a series of steps, but you cannot set the size to anything in between.

Simple and practical solution for different display configurations

Overall, HiDock does a great job. This is a very lightweight application that will run in the menu bar and can be completely hidden when configured. The only gripe is the lack of Dock size tweaks, but that probably won’t be a deal breaker for most users.
