Homebrew installs the things you need that Apple (or your Linux system) didn’t. Homebrew installs packages to its own directory and then symlinks their files to /usr/local.

Homebrew will not install files outside of the prefix, and you can place a Homebrew installation anywhere you want. Trivially create your own Homebrew packages. Everything is Git and Ruby underneath, so hack away with the knowledge that you can easily revert your changes and merge upstream updates.

Homebrew formulas are simple Ruby scripts.
