You often don’t really know what an icon will look like in the Dock or menu bar until you actually see it. By that time, the application may have been compiled, and replacing it would require a lot of extra work.

Icon preview Designed to help developers create the most beautiful icons for their applications. It allows you to preview your projects in the Dock and menu bar as you design them, before compiling your projects.

After launching the application, you will see two new icons in the Dock and menu bar. Assuming you have your images ready, just place them on your app’s icon to preview them. When your applications are complete, you’ll see exactly what they will look like.

If any changes must be made, there is no need to load the image again. After the file is modified, the preview will automatically update. You can also right-click on the image and preview it from the Open with > Icon Preview menu item.

There are some more interesting features to mention. The first allows you to preview multiple icons sequentially, for three seconds each. You need to use the shortcut provided by the developer here.

The second offers integration with Sketch, allowing you to preview an artboard simply by dragging it onto the Dock icon. If you want your icons to update automatically when saved to Sketch, you’ll need to use the Sketch plugin available here.

For such a simple app, icon previews can be very helpful. It makes it easier to create perfect application icons and ensures that you don’t need to recompile your project just to change an icon that doesn’t look as good as you imagined.
