Downloader Talking about download manager, it is an old name and has been around since 2009. It continues to be one of the most popular options, thanks in large part to its availability on Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Like most download managers, this app allows you to manage multiple downloads, pause and resume downloads, and use multiple connections to speed up downloads. It also has some other neat features like a captcha solver, auto-extractor and authentication as well as support for plugins.

As capable as ever

In short, JDownloader has all the features you can expect from a download manager and even some features you don’t normally get. You can add multiple files and even provide a list of download links to queue them all at once.

Multiple connections can be used to increase download speeds, and you can set priorities for each item, pause and resume, change URLs during downloads, and more. It’s safe to say that you won’t miss anything even if you switch from a paid app.

Some specialized functions to overcome limitations

JDownloader has the ability to rotate between multiple proxies, which helps bypass rate limits and other possible blocking. It also includes an automatic CAPTCHA solver, which serves a similar purpose but doesn’t work with as many websites.

If a premium account is required, or you just need a password to access your files, you can provide that information for automatic use. It can also extract archives automatically, even if they are encrypted.

The interface is showing its age

While Java-based applications don’t look that great at the best of times, JDownloader has looked essentially the same throughout its existence, and the UI hasn’t aged well either. The bubble notifications look particularly outdated and I can’t disable them fast enough.

Overall, this is a powerful and versatile download manager, especially for bulk downloads or paid hosting. It’s packed with features you might not even find in paid apps, but it can be a little tricky to get the hang of, and the interface really needs an update.
