Every Apple and non-Apple device with a network interface has a unique identifier (MAC address) that can be used to track it when you connect to a public network (usually over Wi-Fi). While your iPhone automatically spoofs the device’s MAC address to limit tracking, your MacBook does not.

link liar is an open source application that makes connecting your MacBook to public networks more secure. When connecting to a new network, it broadcasts a random MAC address instead of the adapter’s unique identifier, and can be easily controlled from the menu bar.

Simple MAC address spoofer

The app is very simple to use. Once launched, you will find it in the menu bar. It lists the original MAC address of each network interface (Ethernet and Wi-Fi), and you can choose to randomize them, manually define a new address, or broadcast the original address.

The menu bar icon highlights whether one of the unique MAC identifiers is being broadcast at any given time, and also displays an indicator for each device. You can also set default actions for new network devices.

Great for public Wi-Fi connections

Whenever you connect your MacBook to an unknown network (usually a public Wi-Fi hotspot), the network owner sees your Wi-Fi adapter’s unique MAC address and can use it to track your activity. Using this application, a random MAC address will be broadcast, just like on iOS devices.

While LinkLiar can also spoof the identifier of an Ethernet adapter, this is less useful since people generally don’t plug into unknown networks via Ethernet cables, and the tracking potential is limited. With that in mind, if your Wi-Fi is spoofed but your Ethernet adapter is spoofed, it would be nice if the menu bar icon didn’t show the leak notification program.

Open source, so no trust required

As with any privacy-related application, you’re bound to ask whether the information available to LinkLiar could be used maliciously. If you don’t trust the developer’s good intentions, you can go ahead and get the source code, analyze it, and compile the application yourself.

No matter how you use it, LinkLiar is a great tool for MacBook users who want to make sure they’re not being tracked by their device’s MAC address over public Wi-Fi networks.
