Apple’s Music app is certainly an improvement over the bloated iTunes, but it’s not perfect. On macOS, navigation can be a bit cumbersome, with only basic controls available in the menu bar. You need to bring up the main UI for most functions, which is not ideal for busy workspaces.

Looking for the Apple Music glass is a simpler playback controller for Apple services that allows you to do almost everything from the menu bar: like and dislike tracks, rate them, add them to your library, open songs/arts​​ Home/Album page, search for music, etc.

Powerful and intuitive menu bar controller

The menu has a clean look and includes just about every common Apple Music feature you can think of. Of particular note are the navigation controls. Once the menu is open, you can use the arrow keys to cycle through the tracks in the playlist. If playback is active, the player will start playing the selected song immediately.

The search function is also worth mentioning. You can start typing right away to find songs in your library, or press Tab to start searching the Apple Music catalog. Tracks in the results can be selected and played using only the keyboard.

Mini Player and Keyboard Shortcuts

As you can see from the app’s preferences, keyboard shortcuts can be configured for all actions, including bringing up the menu first. You can do everything without touching the mouse, which is a great tool for those who listen to music at work.

The optional mini-player comes with its own shortcuts, but it definitely needs some refinement. Compared to what the Apple Music app offers, it’s pretty lacking. It can’t be moved, it disappears once you switch to another app, and it offers very limited functionality.

Control music on all Apple devices

If you also have an iPhone or iPad, Looking Glass is a more attractive option. One purchase lets you use it on all your devices, and it’s easier to manage your library than a music mobile app.

While the mini player still needs improvement, the menu bar controls provided by Look Glass are very useful. They allow you to manage playback and navigation without opening the Music app, and are especially useful when you’re working.
