Clicking the scroll wheel can do a lot of things, but many MacBook and Magic Mouse users may not be aware of them because those devices don’t come with a middle mouse button.
middle click is an open source application that provides this useful feature for Mac users who don’t know what they’re missing, and for those who know but don’t know how to enable it. The app only simulates a scroll wheel click whenever you click or tap with three fingers on the trackpad or magic mouse.
life without middle click
The middle mouse button has many uses, but it’s especially useful when browsing. For example, it allows you to open any link in a new tab or close an existing tab more easily. It can save you a lot of time when managing a lot of tabs or opening multiple links.
While the MacBook’s trackpad and Magic Mouse are impressive enough in their own way, the lack of a middle mouse button, or something that can mimic its functionality, could be a deal-breaker for some.
Use three fingers to simulate a scroll wheel click
After launching the app, look at its icon in the menu bar and choose when to trigger the middle button. A three-finger tap is the fastest method, but it can be prone to accidental activation. To be on the safe side, you can choose to enable the feature only when you tap the control surface with three fingers.
I tested the app with the Magic Mouse, and middle-clicking is pretty intuitive considering I usually only use a classic mouse. It only took me a few minutes to get used to it and it made browsing a lot smoother.
For those who can’t live without the middle button
Unless you’ve only ever used a laptop or Apple’s signature mouse, you’re probably missing out on the scroll wheel and what it offers. Well, MiddleClick pretty much solves this problem, and it does so in a very intuitive way.
