Whether you’re painting, comparing two pieces of art, or using an object as a reference, it can be helpful to layer two images on top of each other. However, not all graphics editors allow you to do this.
cover Provides a very simple way to set up image overlays. You simply place it in a dedicated window with customizable opacity and scale, then move said window over any other application you’re using.
Once you launch the application, you will see a semi-transparent window on your desktop along with overlay controls. You can drag and drop images directly into the window and they will appear semi-transparent. The window can then be moved freely.
The controls let you change the window’s opacity, the image’s scale, position, and rotation. Click “Float” and the window’s title bar and background will be hidden, leaving only a translucent image. You can then use the controls to move the image, but only within the scope of the window.
The controls are very easy to understand and use, but they can get a little sluggish when working with high-resolution images. It would be nice if the control could be attached to the image window and turned on or off as needed.
When you float an image window, you can adjust it via the controls, but you can no longer move the window. To do this, you need to unfloat it.
The app remembers the last positions of both windows when they were closed, so you can continue working on projects that rely on precise positioning even after restarting.
Overlays work really well and are a simple solution to problems that your graphics software may not be able to handle. It’s versatile and relatively easy to use, but there are certainly ways it could be improved.
