Screen space can become an issue when you have multiple windows open at the same time, especially on smaller MacBooks. There are various ways to manage this issue, such as picture-in-picture mode which is widely used in some apps and devices.

pip hero Introducing a PiP system that should work with every Mac application and give you great flexibility in window management. It allows you to create a resizable, always-on-top version of a window that copies its contents but is non-interactive.

Works with any Mac application

After launching, you will find PiPHero running in the menu bar. It automatically detects active windows and you can create a picture-in-picture window simply by clicking on any of them; it can be moved and resized freely, and it will remain on top of the regular window.

The app’s picture-in-picture mode exactly replicates the contents of the original window, including the mouse cursor if it happens to move over it. This is great for compatibility, but there are some caveats.

some inherent limitations

First, if you want the picture-in-picture window to refresh rather than a snapshot of the original application, it needs to remain on the desktop. Hiding it will prevent any updates, minimizing it will cause the picture-in-picture view to become distorted.

It’s worth noting that in some cases, such as when a YouTube video is active, the picture-in-picture copy is only updated when the browser window is in the foreground, otherwise the video source is paused. This may make the application less versatile and will require testing for every application you wish to use it with.

If you try to resize the original window after creating a picture-in-picture view, the aspect ratio of the picture-in-picture window will not update. You have to close it and recreate it.

Very easy to use

You can close any active picture-in-picture window by clicking the button in the upper left corner. Resize like any macOS window, but remember not to increase its size beyond that of the original window as it will appear blurry.

Finally, PiPHero’s functionality is not that complex, as it essentially captures the contents of a window and copies it into a copy that is always on top. It should be compatible with almost everything, but it has some limitations that hinder users in many cases. It’s also based on Electron, so it’s not exactly lightweight.
