With the Pro Video Formats update installed, you can also import, process, and export Material eXchange Format (MXF) files in all three applications.

The Pro Video Formats archive comes with an installer package that, in addition to MXF support, integrates the following video codecs: Apple Intermediate Codec, Apple ProRes, AVC-Intra, DVCPRO HD, HDV, XDCAM EX / HD / HD422, MPEG IMX, and Uncompressed 4:2:2.

Since the installer does most of the work, all you have to do is follow the on-screen instructions and provide the password for your computer’s administrator account when prompted. This software update can also be installed through the Mac App Store: navigate to the Updates panel and select the appropriate option.

Import, edit and export MXF files from Apple video processing applications

The MXF file format can be used for both video and audio content, but the important fact is that it preserves metadata information about the inner media content. Professional video format updates ensure that this data can be read in the Final Cut application and preserved during editing.

Additionally, the Apple Compressor app lets you convert video to MXF format. Note that in Final Cut Pro, you also have the option to export an MXF file with custom metadata content.
