While there are plenty of screen recorders for macOS, there’s been a notable shortage of powerful open source screen recorders. At least, until now.

Quick Recorder is a free, open source Swift app that provides everything you need from a normal screen recorder, all in a very lightweight package. It is easy to use, customizable, and well designed.

The main interface has a minimalist layout and provides access to all available recording modes. You can capture the screen, a screen area, a specific application, a window, a mobile device, or just the system audio.

QuickRecorder can be displayed in the Dock, the menu bar, or both. If you choose to hide it from the Dock, you can control everything from the menu bar, including starting, pausing, or stopping recording.

When shooting, once you select a recording mode, you can choose between three resolution modes, three quality settings, and more frame rate options. Some users may wish for more in-depth fine-tuning, but at least it’s all pretty intuitive.

You can also customize other advanced recording settings, such as color space, format, and encoder. In addition, you can include or exclude certain objects from the screen or screen area recording, such as the cursor, desktop files, QuickRecorder itself, and even other applications.

Although not available by default, you can enable the screen magnifier by setting a hotkey. This way, it will be available while recording and allow you to highlight certain areas. Other hotkeys are also available to start or control the capture process.

If you’re also recording with a webcam, it’s good to see that Apple’s Presenter Overlay mode is supported (only on macOS 14). On macOS 12/13, the standard camera view is displayed.

QuickRecorder does just about everything you could want from a screen recorder. Sure, you’ll find paid apps that come with extra bells and whistles, but those are rarely used, at least by the average person. This tool should be good enough for just about everyone, and the fact that it’s free and open source makes it even better.
