Although Apple has designed many tools to help you, window management in macOS is not always the smoothest or most intuitive experience. If you are looking for maximum efficiency, keyboard shortcuts are always faster, and there is no harm in borrowing established Windows features.

rectangle You can use the above two methods to completely change macOS window management. It adds customizable hotkeys for moving and resizing windows, as well as a snapshot assist function similar to Windows, which functions almost as good as the original function.

Use hotkeys to move and resize windows

This part of the application is very simple. Using key combinations, you can move windows to half, a corner or even a third of the screen, freely adjust their size, move them to different displays, maximize them, and so on.

All these keyboard shortcuts are fully customizable, so you can define combinations that are easier to remember. If you need help at any time, just click the app’s menu bar icon to see a list of all configured hotkeys.

Snap the window to the edge of the screen

Since Windows 7, similar features have been provided in Windows, and it would be too useful if they were not introduced into macOS. Essentially, when you drag a window to a certain part of the edge of the screen, it moves and resizes accordingly.

Using these gestures, you can send a window to half of the screen, maximize it, move it to a corner of the desktop, or even resize it to cover one-third or two-thirds of the screen area. It may be difficult to find all the snap areas at first, but there is a useful guide on the project’s GitHub page.

If you want to restore the window to its previous position and size after capturing it to the edge of the screen, a simple hotkey can be done (⌃⌥⌫ default). I just want this to be done automatically when the “Uncapture” window is activated, just like in Microsoft’s operating system.

An almost indispensable window management application for macOS

After trying Rectangle, you may find that without this application, it will be difficult for you to use your Mac anymore. Window management becomes easier, especially after you get used to the capture area.

Since it is based on Spectacle, which is no longer maintained, Rectangle is clearly a better choice, and most other alternatives do not offer as much versatility and do not include a price tag. Most importantly, Rectangle is also open source.
