There are a variety of reasons to monitor keystrokes on a Mac, many of which are legal. For example, KVM software can’t run without knowing what you’re typing. However, malware can also intercept keystrokes to steal sensitive information, so timely detection is important.

Thunder key is a relatively simple app that scans for keyboard event clicks and notifies you when a new one is installed. It can detect most types of macOS keyloggers, and it can also show which applications monitor keystrokes for legitimate purposes.

Scan for keyboard event clicks

After installing the app, it will run the first scan. You can choose to ignore Apple software, which is understandably trustworthy. The scan results will list all the keyboard clicks, and the process that installed them.

ReiKey shows you whether event hits are global or process-specific, and whether they are passive listeners or active filters. You can right-click a process to ignore its alerts or be taken to its location in the Finder.

Get notified when a new event faucet is installed

After finding an existing keylogger, the app can continue monitoring new installations. When a new keyboard event tap is detected, it will generate a notification center alert and you can open the app window to see more information.

By default, ReiKey runs in the menu bar, you can disable live monitoring or run a scan by clicking the menu bar icon. However, you can also have the app run silently in the background after customizing your preferences.

Useful app for discovering keyloggers

ReiKey is useful if you have questions about an application, or if you just want to make sure your keystrokes aren’t intercepted by unknown malware. It also gives you a better understanding of legitimate applications that may be being monitored.
