RetroArch is a frontend for emulators, game engines and media players. Among other things, it allows you to run classic games on a wide range of computers and consoles through its smooth graphical interface. The settings are also uniform so that the configuration is done once and for all. In addition to this, you can play original game discs (CDs) from RetroArch.
RetroArch has advanced features like shaders, online gaming, rewind, next frame response times, runahead, machine translation, blind accessibility features and more!
Characteristics
Graphical user interface
- Ozon is the default graphical interface for RetroArch. It’s optimized for navigation with a game controller and features a database-driven playlist system for browsing your collection with metadata and thumbnails. The graphical interface also allows you to adjust settings and perform other customizations on a game-by-game basis.
Cross platform
- RetroArch can run on the usual platforms such as Windows, macOS and Linux, but it stands alone in that it can support far more platforms beyond just that.
- We support operating systems that even Microsoft and Apple themselves don’t support anymore, such as macOS on PowerPC Macs, and RetroArch is available on Windows operating systems as far back as Windows 95.
- On top of all that, RetroArch also runs on iOS and Android for tablets and phones, as well as game consoles like PS2, PS3, PSP, PS Vita, Wii, Wii U, 2DS, 3DS, Switch and more!
Waiting time
- RetroArch is capable of next frame response time. This means that there should be almost no noticeable difference when it comes to input latency from real hardware, FPGA/clone or original hardware.
- On top of it all, there are various settings you can configure to optimize the results even more.
Highly configurable
- Our advanced settings interface allows you to adjust every possible option for how the games run and display.
- Of course, each setting has a sensible default so you can get started quickly.
Automatic controller mapping
- Standard game controllers are automatically configured when plugged in, just like on a real game console.
- Ideal for starting a multiplayer game when a friend visits with their own controller.
- You can also configure everything manually, assign special actions to combos and more!
Recording and streaming
- RetroArch is capable of recording your gaming session to a video file.
- The same mechanism also allows you to stream your games directly to platforms such as Twitch.tv or Youtube.

- SHADER: Added scrolling scanline simulation based on the shader subframe feature. This is implemented with a rolling scissor instead of in the shader itself, as this is more efficient, although it may not work for every shader pass – we may need an option to exclude certain passes. The implementation simply splits the screen up by the number of subframes and then moves the scissors straight down the screen over the number of subframes
