Many of us use our Macs for both work and play, which means that, in addition to our backs, our eyes suffer a lot. They don’t really have to stare at close-up screens for long periods of time, and eye-related health problems are becoming very common.
SaveMyEyes is one of the easiest apps designed to help you keep your eyes healthy. It runs in the menu bar and reminds you to take regular breaks every so often at fully customizable intervals. It’s free, open source, and extremely lightweight.
After launching the app, click its menu bar icon and set your preferred work and rest intervals. Sound notifications can also be enabled, and the app can be configured to run automatically at login.
Once everything is set, check the run timer Box. The app will start a countdown and trigger notifications for breaks and when you need to get back to work. The icon doesn’t show a timer, which might actually be a good thing, since you won’t be focusing on the time remaining instead of your work.
While the app is designed to keep your eyes safe, it’s also great for your back, hands, neck, and just about any other part of your body that’s affected by prolonged sitting and repetitive motion.
Of course, you’ll get the best results if you actually get up from your desk, walk around, and try to focus your eyes on distant objects.
SaveMyEyes is written in Swift, so it’s small and efficient, and only appears as an icon in the menu bar. It won’t get in your way or distract you.
All in all, it’s a great reminder to take a break for users who want something really simple to get work done. It lacks the advanced features that more complex apps have, but there’s a good chance you won’t need those bells and whistles anyway.
