Mac users are fortunate to have a powerful and easy-to-use built-in screenshot tool. However, third-party applications can provide additional features that are better suited to specific workflows.

shooter is an alternative designed primarily for professionals who need to be able to zoom in and analyze pixels, extract colors, make measurements, and insert annotations. Best for graphic designers and developers, it’s also a great option for other users.

Many capture modes and annotation tools

Shottr is a small application written in Swift for maximum performance. It’s designed to work with hotkeys, just like the built-in screenshot tool. It supports regions, windows and scrolling screenshots with customizable shortcuts.

After capturing the image, it will automatically open in the editor. Here you can edit the image in various ways, such as by glitching or pixelating areas, as well as annotate your screenshots with the available markup tools.

Color picker, screen ruler and OCR

The app lets you zoom in enough to analyze individual pixels. Additionally, you can extract the color of any pixel, grab the text color, or get the average color of a selected area.

You can also easily measure the distance between various elements by pressing the arrow keys (up and down for vertical dimensions and left and right for horizontal dimensions). This measurement can be added to the screenshot.

Finally, Shottr comes with built-in text recognition. All you have to do is select an area with unselectable text and hit a hotkey – the app will send the processed text directly to the clipboard.

Can serve as a great alternative to the built-in capture utility

If you need more than a macOS capture tool, Shottr might be the w ay to go. It’s not the best option for quickly grabbing multiple images, as the editor always opens after each shot, but it’s worth a look if you need to process your images further.
