Hash values or checksums are used in many ways. They help you ensure that the files you download are not corrupted and provide an easy way to verify that the files have not been tampered with on the way from the source to your device.
Carl Hash is a very simple application that enables you to calculate a hash value and compare it to an already existing value. It supports multiple algorithms and stores a log of all operations and resulting hashes.
Easy to use hash calculator
The user interface has a simple layout. Select the algorithm you want to use, load the file, and examine the available information in the main window. You can view the file’s path, size, checksum, and icon, and display its location in Finder. Unfortunately, you cannot use drag and drop to import files.

Once you’ve calculated the checksum, you can get an existing hash (such as one provided by the software publisher) and paste it into the field at the bottom of the window. The app will tell you if the two match, and if they don’t, you know the file is corrupted or has been modified by a third party.
Maintain logs and customize behavior
You can consult the log later if you want to quickly browse through a bunch of files without writing down the calculated hash of each file. This stores the path, algorithm, and checksum of all past operations launched by the current session or by all applications.
The log window can even be opened automatically on startup and all logs will be deleted when closed. It can be accessed from the File menu or from the application’s menu bar icon, the latter of which you can hide if you prefer.
Basic but useful hash calculator
It would be great if CalHash supported drag and drop and could handle multiple files at once. If you need to work quickly and deal with a bunch of files in your workflow, it may not be an ideal solution. But it’s a great tool for calculating and comparing hashes of individual files.
