There are many backup utilities out there, but they tend to get very complicated once you get to the paid tier. However, there’s no reason a simpler, free app can’t get the job done.
Smart backup is one of those free options, and it’s very powerful. Its features are fairly limited, but it has everything you need to set up and run basic backup jobs, including automation.
What’s appreciated is how easy it is to set up. First add the backup destination, then add one or more sources. Each destination is essentially a separate backup job, and any number of sources can be assigned to it.

After defining the backup source, you can start the job. By default, content will be synced, but you can also add subfolders to exclude them from destinations or skip certain sources if necessary.
If a backed-up file needs to be deleted or changed during synchronization, the application can archive it to ensure important data is not lost. You can also choose to clear the archive folder after a certain number of days.
For an app that’s free and relatively simple, it’s nice to see that automation is still available. Each job can be scheduled to run automatically every day, at a specific time, or on specific days of the week. You can also adjust some advanced settings, such as whether to ignore label changes or the number of replication threads to use.
While SmartBackup isn’t as versatile and full-featured as some paid solutions, it has everything you need to set up simple backup jobs for personal use. In fact, including automation is especially helpful, especially since everything is done in the background.
