Example usage

Here I have my steam folder in the default location and the application will find it for you. If not, select the folder \Steam\SteamApps\Common\ itself, and a secondary hard drive D:\, where I have created a folder.

Note that Steam Mover can be used to move any folder around (by changing the source path), but for Steam the maximum benefit is moving individual games from the Common folder.

I simply select some games I don’t play very often and click the “right arrow”. This fires up some command line windows – let them run to completion.

It uses the built-in Windows commands: xcopy, rd and mklink. If you want to see the exact commands it runs, check “I want to run the commands myself”.

When you’re done, you’ll see that I’ve moved Left 4 Dead and World of Goo to the D:\ drive, but because of the Junction Points created on the C:\ drive, the games continue to work in Steam.

If you want to move games back to the C:\ drive, just click the left arrow button.

The pros

  • You can store all your steam games on multiple drives and they will continue to work! You no longer need to shuffle to install/uninstall to get enough disk space on drive C:\ for the latest game.
  • You can take advantage of the fast but small SSD drive by only storing the games you regularly play on the SSD and moving the older games to a slower, larger hard drive. And all games remain playable on steam.
  • If you want to see what it’s doing and run the commands from the command line yourself, check “I want to run the commands myself”. Note that SteamMover runs commands one at a time, stopping if it encounters an error.
  • I actually install steam and all the games on my big D:\ HDD and use Steam Mover to just move my favorite games to C:\ SSD to speed up when I play them.

Cons

  • No guarantee. Whatsoever.
  • Things can go wrong. I take no responsibility for lost files, yadda, yadda. It moves a lot of files around, without much control over permissions, so it might not be perfect. It works fine for me though. If it breaks, you may need to copy/move files around yourself, restore from a backup, or re-download your steam games. Please provide feedback below if you get a bug and I’ll try to fix it in the next release.
  • Requires Microsoft Windows Vista or later (Windows 7, 8, 8.1 are reported to work well). It will NOT work on Windows XP.
  • It requires NTFS formatted drives. It will not work with FAT32.
  • Junction Points can only move entire folders, not individual files. So unfortunately it won’t help with the massive .gcf files in the steamapps folder itself (mostly Valve games like Counter-Strike and the Half-Life series). To those who have asked, I’ve tried using mklink to create hardlinks, but they don’t work for linking to another drive – they only give a shortcut to a file on the same drive.

What is new:

The first release. So far it’s been so good that it hasn’t needed an update.
