Stellar is a free and open source 3D planetarium specially designed to render realistic skies and astronomical objects you can see with the naked eye, telescope or binoculars.
Unobtrusive GUI
Stellarium comes with a minimalist interface that allows you to enjoy views, navigate the sky, travel through time, and change views and locations. Full-screen mode lets you take advantage of your Mac’s entire screen, focus on stargazing, and hide the control toolbar.
The great thing about Stellarium is that you can use it as a learning or teaching tool, unencumbered by various technical issues like clouds, light pollution or weather. So you can view a sky map with origins, planets and nebulae along with their labels, names, satellites, constellations and associated artwork.
Supports numerous observation locations
What’s more, Stellarium gives you the option to view the sky from different locations on Earth as well as from extraterrestrial locations such as the Moon, Jupiter, Mars, Europa, Uranus and other known planets.
time travel
Another great feature is the time travel tool, which you can use to jump to different points in time. Additionally, you can fast-forward and track the movement of different celestial bodies. This feature can be easily accessed from the auto-hide toolbar located in the lower left corner of the window.
Stellarium provides basic navigation tools, drag and drop support, zoom tools, and customizable keyboard shortcuts. A discreet HUD lets you constantly check your current position, field of view, graphics performance and timing details.
Extensible via plugins
Additionally, a plugin system allows you to add satellites, new telescope configurations, eyepiece simulations, and more. Best of all, you can add new solar system objects from different online sources and insert your own deep sky objects, constellation images, landscapes, scripts and other elements.
