static color is an open source application that attempts to solve a problem affecting some M1/M2/M3 Mac users: temporary jitter (FRC). This technology alternates pixel colors to increase the observable color depth, but for some users it can cause eye strain, nausea, fatigue, dry eyes, and other such symptoms.

Technologies such as pulse-width modulation (PWM) have been used for many years to provide manufacturers with cheaper and easier ways to control brightness or achieve better images. However, many people are sensitive to them, and temporal dithering is used in all Apple Silicon Macs.

The app itself is very simple. It will run in the menu bar and you can choose to disable or re-enable dithering at any time. It can also be launched upon login for a seamless experience. Currently, the verification results are quite complex, as you can see on the application’s GitHub page.

Of course, disabling temporal dithering has an impact on image quality, as it results in a reduction in observable color depth. But if you suffer from eye strain and can’t use your Mac for long periods of time, it’s definitely a worthwhile trade-off.
