It is strongly recommended to use SSL encryption to secure the connection between the remote client and the server. tunnel is a command-line utility for macOS that can be used to add SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) functionality to your transports.

Compile and configure your connection from source

stunnel is not a binary: to use it, you must download the source package and compile the utility via Terminal.app. Once you have a terminal window open, make sure to navigate to the stunnel folder, then use the “./configure && make && make install

Note that you must have previously installed the command line tools included with Apple’s Xcode IDE to complete the installation process.

In order to work properly, stunnel requires a configuration file which must contain the connection address (IP addresses that can be separated by colons) and the port number. Users must manually create these profiles.

stunnel can grant access to servers using SSL certificates and includes support for CRL and OCSP certificate revocation. Other features include that Stunnel can handle SNI, PFS, and FIPS protocols.

You can use Stunnel to protect applications using various types of protocols such as SMTP, POP3, NNTP, CIF, PROXY, CONNECT or IPv6. Also, stunnel can redirect SSL clients if authentication fails.

stunnel proposes a simple solution for adding SSL encryption to client-to-server connections via the command line. Just install the app, create a suitable configuration file with connection details and stunnel will take care of the rest.
