New features of TeXShop 4.67:
- In version 4.66, when the “Ascii” code was added to TeXShop, an unfortunate error was introduced. If the source file contains a magic line at the top of the set code, but the code is spelled incorrectly and therefore is not one of the codes understood by TeXShop, TeXShop hangs and cannot be typeset until the user exits and restarts TeXShop. This is fixed, TeXShop will now display an error dialog and select an alternative encoding. By the way, the best way to avoid this error is to use the “encoding” macro, which forces you to choose an encoding from the menu and only provides legal choices.
- Erik A. Johnson discovered that when the source file is in a Google Drive volume, the “Trash AUX File” command in TeXShop fails because Google Drive does not have a Trash folder. He checked the TeXShop source and provided several fixes for this problem. TeXShop 4.67 contains his most direct fixes. The fix calls the “trashItemAtURL” method of NSFileManager to put the item in the trash can, but if this method returns an error, call the “removeItemAtPath” method to completely delete the item.

Set up TeXShop to use your TeX distribution
In order to be able to use TeXShop, you must ensure that the TeX distribution is installed on your Mac beforehand. The easiest way is to download the MacTeX provided by the TeX User Group and double-click the package: the MacTeX installer will take care of the rest (just follow the instructions on the screen).
However, to complete the setup, you must navigate to the TeXShop preferences window, select the Engine tab and set the correct TeX installation path.
Simple and intuitive user interface
Using TeXShop is very simple: the main window of the application is reserved for text editing, and the toolbar at the top allows you to quickly change typography, macros or labels. The same area provides access to a series of templates, which can be adjusted to your own needs.
Naturally, TeXShop has a preview area where you can navigate the contents of various TeX files and a console window for analyzing possible errors.
Most TeXShop customization options are placed in the “Preferences” window and organized into various tabs. Among other things, the app allows you to adjust the default font style, default typesetting commands, or synchronization method.

If you need to quickly preview and create your own TeX files, TeXShop is a good tool. Of course, if you want to process or start a document from scratch, learning TeX is absolutely necessary.
