How does TunnelBear work?

TunnelBear hides your location using a virtual private network, or VPN for short. We’ll try to explain exactly what it is without all the technical vocabulary.

When you use the internet, every time you click on a link to open a new page, you send a signal to the website you’re visiting and say something like “hey, show me the page where I can watch that cool new video”. On the internet, this is called a request.

Each of these requests contains a unique identification number called an “IP address”, which is basically your online address when connected. It is used to say to the internet “hey, this request came from here, send all pages I request to this address”.

Your address will be unique to the internet connection you use, so it’s different when you’re at the coffee shop and at home. However, because this request contains your location, websites can determine your location and block you from accessing certain information.

What is new

Mac us

  • macOS version updated to 4.0.0

Windows

  • Took the bears to the groomers. We’ve cleaned up the app a bit, and made some design improvements.
  • WireGuard officially supported. Bear Speed +9.
  • New connection settings provide better control over the VPN. For advanced users, you can now choose which VPN protocol you want to use.
  • Breakups can be tough, but we’ve said goodbye to the Trusted Networks feature. Users will no longer be able to bypass selected networks.
  • Thanks to the localization support of the Localization Lab (localizationlab.org/contributor), our bears are now fluent in Ukrainian.
  • Brushed out some bugs.
  • 18% more bears
  • We’ve added connection ratings so you can tell us how your bear is tunnelling. We use this information to improve the service for everyone.
  • The next time you open TunnelBear, you’ll see a brand new color scheme. Your bear has shed its winter fur and is ready for spring!

Android

  • Android version updated to 3.6.9
  • Took the bears to the groomers. Just love that New Bear smell, don’t you?

You may not know this, but bears are natural housekeepers. They love a tidy den just like the rest of us. For this release, they did a good job of sweeping out old leaves, chasing away pesky bugs, and still had time for a good brushing. No bears were added with this release. Maybe next time.

  • The Bears have been working on their wind sprints to make connection times even faster! When not in the gym, the Bears upgraded the map for faster load and roll speeds. Give the map a test drive and admire how smooth it feels.
  • While checking out the new map, you may notice that Bear now connects to tunnels when you click on the tunnel opening.
  • To get some quick protein, we chomped a bug that miscalculated the amount of data left on some accounts and accidentally disconnected them. Your bear should know how much data you have at any given time now.
  • Last but not least, we say goodbye to IKEv2. It hasn’t been playing nice in the tunnels for a while now, and to ensure you have the most secure connection, we felt it best to remove the protocol.
