What is Unreal Engine?
Unreal Engine is a 3D game engine developed by Epic Games, developers of Fortnite. The Unreal Engine is now in its fifth iteration, having been around since 1998, it is one of the most established and well-regarded tools for game creation and 3D visualization. Unreal Engine has been used to create many popular games such as PUBG, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Street Fighter 5, Borderlands 3, Gears 5, Batman: Arkham City and Valorant.
How many GB do you need for Unreal Engine?
Once installed, Unreal Engine 5 will take up anywhere from 50GB to 120GB, but you’ll need more free space to store your projects. For a smaller game, you can fit in 10-50GB, depending on assets. All in all, a 512GB drive may be sufficient to work with, but 1TB or 2TB is recommended.
What are other Unreal Engine 5 system requirements?
For PC, you need Windows 10 64-bit or later, a quad-core Intel or AMD CPU that is 2.5 GHz or faster and 8 GB of RAM. For macOS, you need Big Sur, quad-core Intel 2.5 GHz or faster and 8 GB of RAM. For Linux, Ubuntu 18.04, a quad-core Intel or AMD 2.5 GHz or faster and 32 GB of RAM.
Does it cost to use Unreal Engine 5?
Unreal Engine is free to use for creating linear content such as movies, and for custom and internal projects. It’s also free for game development startups. A 5% royalty kicks in if and when your title grosses over $1 million dollars.
Which is easier to use, Unity or Unreal Engine?
There is no right answer to that question. Both game engines are extremely robust and offer a fully featured free version to get you started. Both have strong communities that you can join and consult with. The general consensus at this stage is that Unity and Unreal Engine are both beginner-friendly and won’t require advanced programming knowledge for simple projects that will get the ball rolling as you learn.

Lumen global lighting and reflections
Lumen is a fully dynamic global lighting and reflector solution that instantly responds to scene and lighting changes, giving artists and designers the ability to create more dynamic scenes with greater realism. Changing the angle of the sun, turning on a flashlight, opening an exterior door, or even blasting a wall will cause a change in indirect lighting and reflections.
The system reproduces diffuse interreflection with infinite bounces and indirect specular reflections, highlighting even the smallest details in expansive, elaborate environments.
Lumen global lighting and reflections disabled
Artists and designers are no longer tied to static scenes with pre-calculated lighting baked into textures—a huge time saver when you can see the results of changes right in the editor without having to rebuild the lighting, or setting up lightmap UVs for individual Static Masks.
Lumen implements efficient Software Ray Tracing, so that global lighting and reflections can be run on a wide range of video cards, while also supporting Hardware Ray Tracing for advanced images.
Since the launch of Unreal Engine 5 Early Access, Lumen has seen the following improvements:
- Full Hardware Ray Tracing Pipeline for Lumen GI and Reflections
- Shipped on next-gen consoles in The Matrix Awakens
- Support for large viewing areas with Far Field Hardware Ray Tracing

Installation:
How to install Unreal Engine on Windows:
- Click the Download button to get our installer.
- Once the download is complete, run the installer.
- Click the Install button when the Epic Games Launcher Setup dialog box appears.
- Log in to Epic Launcher.
- On the Epic Games Launcher loading screen, click the Unreal Engine tab.
- Click the Install Engine button to download and install the latest version of Unreal Engine.
- Please read our Unreal Engine End User License Agreement (EULA) before clicking the Accept button.
- Depending on your system specifications, downloading and installing Unreal Engine will take between 10-40 minutes.
To install Unreal Engine in macOS:
- Click the Download button to get our installer.
- Double-click the EpicGamesLauncher.dmg icon in the Finder to open a new Finder window.
- Drag the Epic Games Launcher icon into the Applications folder.
