Its powerful feature set makes it an ideal solution for cataloging large collections of media content. Specifically, it is aimed at collections that cross multiple storage devices and where it is otherwise inherently difficult to find a particular file in a collection.
Through the user-friendly interface, it is possible to quickly and easily find any file in your collection and play it.
Videophile is a Direct Show based application and therefore it can play any media type for which your system has the necessary filters installed. My recommendation, if you’re not already using it, is to have ffdshow installed, along with Haali Media Splitter to handle MPEG-2 and Matroska streams.
You might want to supplement this with either or both Real Alternative and Quicktime Alternative for the Realmedia and Quicktime formats respectively, although there is some doubt as to the legality of these filters.

What’s new
[Functional] In Tile-Mode, when hovering the mouse, the user has the option to preview the file as either a series of still images or a compressed video preview
[Functional] Vee-Hive introduces the idea of ’Assets’, which is a means of storing, in a sidecar file, any images/videos that have previously been extracted for another purpose, e.g. creation of Storyboards.
[Functional] ‘References’ can now be attached to either labels or individual files. A reference is essentially a link to something “outside” the library. This can be a link to (for example) a Word document, or a URL to a relevant website. References are considered a type of “asset”.
[Functional] Files can be moved to new locations in the file system
[Functional] Files can be renamed. This can be achieved either via the file inspector, or when in list mode.
[Functional] Items on the Crumb bar can be dragged and rearranged via the mouse, making it possible to quickly change search terms.
[Functional] Tab layouts can be “remembered” on an individual basis (for example, one tab can be sorted and in tile mode, while another can be unsorted and in list mode).
[Functional] When sorting, columns can (optionally) be ‘banded’. For example, anything above 1080p is banded as ‘Full HD’.
