The terminal will always be the tool of choice for developers, but it feels like the command line interface has fallen behind other development tools. Of course, you probably don’t need a fancy GUI to get your work done, but there are plenty of other useful features any developer would love.

through is a promising project looking for a more modern makeover on the old terminal. It has many code editor features, makes it easier to enter and manage commands, splits commands into blocks, includes lookup tools and useful shortcuts, and provides the benefits of a native Rust-based application.

Developer friendly terminal

While it’s easy to get the hang of classic terminal utilities, development has been hampered by the lack of features typically found in code editors. In Warp, commands are divided into blocks, and you can easily navigate from one to another, position the cursor with a single click, batch edit with multiple cursors, and more.

The app provides suggestions for command completion and remembers all past inputs.you can press ↑ See the full list of previous commands, or just the commands that match what you’ve already typed. The Command Palette can also help you find tools and shortcuts that you might not easily remember.

Workflow and AI Command Search

Workflows make it easier to execute complex commands.You can access these by ⌃⇧R. A bunch of these are included by default, and you can create new ones and share them with others. An open source repository is provided where you can find more commands and share your own commands with the community.

An experimental feature allows you to find related commands by describing an action only in natural language. This can help you when you are unfamiliar with certain commands or don’t remember them.

Rust-based and GPU-accelerated for improved performance

It’s no secret that native applications are always faster and less resource-intensive, but cross-platform development is much easier with web technologies. Warp is completely native on the Mac, as will the upcoming Windows and Linux releases.

Terminal applications utilizing GPUs are nothing new, and Warp is no exception. It uses Metal to render objects in the terminal and supports high frame rates even on 4k monitors.

Ambitious and impressive terminal

Many other features are planned for future releases, including the ability to run documents in the terminal or share sessions with other users. Of course, support for the other two major operating systems is also planned, which would be a good thing for cross-platform developers.

Warp is already a massive upgrade of the classic terminal utility, and it will only get better as more features are added. It has all the benefits of the old command-line interface, while offering a host of quality-of-life improvements and a redesigned, more intuitive workflow.
