EA Desk top App is the latest version Electronic Arts Universal Game Service

Video game company Valve pioneered its own general store/library/launch service Steam in 2003. Since then, other gaming companies have introduced their versions – from Ubisoft Connect to Bethesda Launcher.

The EA desktop app is built from the ground up and rebranded version Origin service from Electronic Arts. Although the desktop application looks sleeker and technically new, it offers almost the same experience as Origin, which is being phased out. You can buy EA games, download, install, run and update them in the app.

New design, same idea

It’s fair to wonder what the point of an EA desktop app is. First of all, it was developed on the basis of player reviews. In addition to smoothly moving your library of games, this also optimizes the overall user experience. There is Dark mode interface and includes extended Game time managementso you can keep track of how much time you spent in the game.

If you’re already using Origin, all of your games will appear on the desktop app. However, both applications cannot run at the same time. If you subscribe to EA Play, a games on demand service, any transactions you make will also appear in the new application.

The EA desktop app is functional and accepts player feedback. EA seems to be aiming to include as many requests as possible. There are even feature roadmap are viewable in Trello, which provides a nice transparency in the development process. As it stands, it’s a smooth, intuitive improvement over the previous launcher.

Built for players

Love them or hate them game launchers are a must in this modern age of video games. EA has been criticized in the past for questionable business practices, especially in regards to microtransactions and exclusive game deals. The desktop app seems worthy of a course correction because sometimes the player’s opinion really matters.
