IMVU client, a leading VoIP service provider, has just released an update for Mac OS X clients (both Windows are unaffected), which is currently only compatible with MacOS 10. IMVU Desktop Beta installs a new backend for your computer that uses your existing authentication details to log in and access the microphone, speakers, control keys, and screen. The IMVU desktop beta requires you to update your current IMVU server, so if you are currently using a MAC computer, you will not be able to take advantage of the latest IMVU technology.

For me, IMVU on mac os x is a complete failure and they don’t provide a client that is reliable enough to really stand up to the competition. IMVU offers its customers the IMVU Desktop option, which is the minimum system requirement to access their client’s various components and access the desktop web tools that make IMVU what it is today. IMVU customers are also missing the IMVU webcam, which they say is a very important feature coming in the next major release. For those who rely heavily on their webcam and video calling, IMVU on mac os x is simply no longer a good fit.

IMVU also claims that the update will allow you to access all of your existing IMVU account data from within your existing Mac client, and they provide a tech support line for that claim. I would call their support line “beep beep” because you can reach them twenty four hours a day and you can never get through to anyone. I spent over a month trying to get my IMVU desktop back on my Mac and was only able to get it working after paying over forty dollars in shipping and handling. When I tried their competitor, MyWireless, I was offered an email address with a download link, which I immediately used. Within minutes of activating my account, I was able to log into my IMVU account from my laptop and restore my entire desktop. By far the best support I have ever received from any company.
