Over the years, I’ve met people who are so proficient in touchscreen keyboards th at typing on their phones barely slows them down. Unfortunately, I am not one of them. I dread having to use a touchscreen to type, and I still wish I could plug in a keyboard and do it the old fashioned way.

Sure, you can just get a Bluetooth keyboard, but what if you want to use a wired device or something that’s currently paired with your Mac? Well, it’s a good thing you asked for, because Keyboard allows you to do just that. Moreover, it even allows you to use an ordinary mouse on your mobile devices.

Use your Mac’s keyboard to type on an iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV

The application is quite simple to use. First of all, you need to set up Bluetooth on your Mac and your mobile device and pair them. Make sure to initiate the connection from the mobile device, as the app will not detect it otherwise. Once this is done, activate the keyboard from your menu bar or by using the ⌥⌘P shortcut key.

If all went well, you should see a window on your desktop informing you that the application is active. All key presses will now be sent to the connected device, making typing much easier. I didn’t notice any lag, and it’s definitely a huge improvement over the touchscreen keyboard.

Now with mouse support

As if using a keyboard to type on mobile devices wasn’t cool enough, now you can control them using a regular mouse. Just press ⌃⌥ (Ctrl + Option) to activate the cursor on the device you are connected to, then use the same key combination again to deactivate it.

How it works?

Normally, you will need to pair your mobile device with an actual Bluetooth keyboard or mouse, as those connected to your Mac cannot send input directly to your phone.

KeyPad circumvents this problem by emulating a Bluetooth keyboard / mouse. When your Mac is connected to a phone, tablet, or TV through this app, it is considered an actual keyboard or mouse, and input can be passed. This is only done when the keyboard is active, so turning the app on and off is like turning a Bluetooth device on and off.

It’s a great app for users who are tired of typing on touchscreen keyboards, as well as for those who want to have a mouse cursor on their mobile devices. As long as you only connect to one device and don’t need to support the mouse, you don’t even have to pay anything. If you want those extra features, the price is more than reasonable.
