Microsoft Word is an office software developed by Microsoft. Word for Windows is part of the Microsoft Office suite but can be downloaded separately. Typically, MS Word requires 4 GB of RAM, DirectX 9, and a dual-core processor. The editor is mainly used to edit documents such as abstracts, letters, summaries and memos. The program contains editing tools to help users create files for office and everyday use. Word documents can be opened and edited on a PC using MS Word, Word Viewer, or other word processors that can import DOC or DOCX format. Its final file extension, DOCX, stands for the Office Open XML International Standard for Office files used in Word 2007 and later.

All Microsoft Office files can include advanced macros and built-in programs. These functions can be used for repetitive sequences of automatic keystrokes and mouse movements; however, macros can also potentially launch and spread viruses in files sent via email, instant messaging applications, and USB sticks. Microsoft Word combats this by adjusting the timing of macros. This reduces the risk of a macro virus infiltrating your computer.

You can also protect your Word file with a password. Word uses Advanced Encryption Standard with a cryptographic hash function to convert your password into a 128-bit key. This ensures that no other user except you can remove all passwords. It also slows down any attempt to access the source code of the file or the contents of the file.
