Despite the growing possibility of a total elimination from professional tennis this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, ATP Tour chief Andrea Gaudenzi refuses to give up.

The tennis season was suspended in early March due to the pandemic, and the hiatus will continue until at least mid-July with many countries locked up to contain the virus.

Wimbledon has been canceled and the French Open postponed from its usual start in May to September, while the status of the United States Open, scheduled for late August, is still unclear.

"It would be unwise to leave it now," said Gaudenzi. "No one knows what will happen, we want to maintain an optimistic vision."

"Obviously, there could be a subset of options, which is to play behind closed doors or decide how to deal with travel restrictions. But so far we have not made these decisions because they are all hypothetical scenarios."

The Tour is working within a six to eight week time frame to decide on tournaments.

"We have set a deadline of May 15 for tournaments in July, after Wimbledon," said the Italian, who reached the singles ranking of 18. "And June 1 for tournaments in August. So we are, In principle, dealing with that, I would say six or eight weeks in advance to make a decision. More than that, it would be foolish to make decisions in my opinion. "

The United States Tennis Association (USTA) is in charge of the United States Open, scheduled to take place from August 31 to September 13 in New York.
