Caleb Plant results vs Caleb Truax: Plant overtakes Truax to defend 168-pound IBF title

Caleb Plant has taken over the business to defend his IBF super middleweight title by dominating Caleb Truax. Now he’s aiming for bigger and better things.

“It’s my goal,” said Plant (21-0, 12 KOs). “I want to be the undisputed first super middleweight champion. It doesn’t matter who he is against. Line them up and I’ll shoot them down.

The fight topped a “PBC on Fox” card from the Shrine Exposition Center in Los Angeles on Saturday night. It was Plant’s first fight since a 10th round stoppage by Vincent Feigenbutz last February.

Plant started off quickly, popping the jab and landing on the body. A short hook in the middle of the first round surprised Truax. It was clear that the speed of “Sweethands” would present a big problem for the challenger. With Plant setting the pace, it didn’t take long for Truax to realize that surviving would be his only victory tonight, and only a moral victory.

Truax tried to force his way inside, but couldn’t stop Plant’s pace.

A short left uppercut from Plant in the fourth round led to a streak in which the champion apparently couldn’t miss with no punches. Plant continued to accumulate the penalty, but was unable to ward off his opponent.

In the sixth round, Truax’s face was a bloody mess, but his durability allowed him to stick around and continue to absorb the punishment. Truax landed a strong right hand in the eighth but lacked any semblance of consistency that could have turned this fight into the glorified fight match it was.

In the end, Plant won cleanly; all the judges noted it 120-108. But it wasn’t unemployment he wanted.

Much of the blame came from an injury he believes he sustained in the middle of the laps.

“I wanted unemployment,” Plant said before revealing a possible broken hand. “I’m disappointed that I didn’t get it, but I injured my hand in the middle of the sleeves.”

With WBA (Super), WBC and 168-pound champion in the ring, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez already having his next two fights lined up, it may be some time before Plant has a chance to unify. Until then, you’ll be looking to stay busy and wait for your opportunity.

“I am ready for those they put in front of me,” he said.
