Matt LaFleur defends Packers’ choice to throw basket in NFC Championship game, with catch

Matt LaFleur still wouldn’t have kicked it.

The Packers head coach was criticized for his decision to throw a late-game basket in the NFC Championship game from the 8-yard line against the Buccaneers, making the score an irrelevant 31-26 and sending him back the ball to Tom. Brady with just over two minutes in regulation time.

On Monday, LaFleur reaffirmed that even with hindsight, he would still have hit that basket, but a three-yard difference would have made the difference.

“That’s what it is. It didn’t work,” LaFleur said Monday. “You know I’m going to own it. But if I had to do it again, if it’s the fourth and the goal of the 8 yard line, we kick the basket.

Interestingly, LaFleur had a small modifier to his decision to kick there: If the Packers’ offense had gotten a bit closer, three yards closer, then the discussion to go to the fourth down would have been different.

While the head coaches of the NFL are “No Ragrets” type people, the decision to kick the basket at this point is ineffective in the situation, as explained here.

Simply put, the Packers would need a touchdown and a 2-point conversion to tie if they failed in that situation, and they would return the ball to Tom Brady and the Buccaneers offense with a little more. two minutes to play and the three timeouts. if they tie the game with a successful TD and a 2 point conversion. That, of course, would give them a chance to win the game in regulation time.

While Aaron Rodgers was criticized for his decision not to throw the ball to the third with real estate ahead of him, pretend games didn’t matter as much as the Packers chose to throw Cart.

It’s a decision that LaFleur clearly agrees with now, although it doesn’t make much sense just yet.
