Ray Cochrane Retires as Agent from Frankie Dettori | Race News

Ray Cochrane has asked for time in his career as an agent for Frankie Dettori after a 20-year partnership.

Derby winning pilot pulled out of the saddle in 2000 due to back problems, five months after being involved in a plane crash that killed pilot Patrick Mackey and drove Cochrane to receive recognition from the Queen of Bravery for bringing Dettori out of the wreckage. .

Cochrane then changed to become Dettori's agent, but decided to retire after a very successful spell together.

He said, "You don't have a lot of time for yourself, I know that since I started riding, and even when you are an agent, you basically live life on the clock."

"I am 63 years old next month, I had my first job at the age of nine and I have been working since.

"I have five bikes and I do cyclocross in winter, so I would like to do more. I trained hard for that last winter and got a few places, like on a Derby winner!

"I also have a half acre lot and a camper that we may be able to use more of at the end of this virus."

Cochrane's highlights in the saddle include winning the 1988 Derby at Kahyasi, as well as Oaks and 1,000 Guinean gold medals aboard the Midway Lady in 1986.

He and Dettori have had many highlights throughout their partnership, but Cochrane highlighted the 2019 campaign as a particular peak.

He said, "We have had incredible days – last season was incredible with 19 Group One winners. I have known Frankie for a long time, we have come a long way and we have had great days on and off the track . "

Dettori may not be appointing a new agent now, and Cochrane added: "I think he will only take care of himself since John (Gosden) is very well organized and riding for him. . "

"He has a few extra attractions, Mark Johnston usually has good ones for him, but he travels mostly for John."
