Amazon seeks to resume French operations from May 19

Online retail giant Amazon has been trying to resume operations since Tuesday in its six warehouses in France that were temporarily closed in a labor dispute over working conditions during the coronavirus pandemic, he said. Friday.

Amazon "has been working on a gradual reopening since May 19" in France, he told AFP in a statement after unions also said agreement had been reached on the terms resumption of operations.

The online retailer was involved in a battle with unions which said that the measures taken to mitigate the risk of contagion for staff were insufficient.

Employees had to deal with an avalanche of orders in the middle of the nearly two-month national closure that ended on Monday and saw the closure of traditional stores.

The clash has been closely watched by the international community, with Amazon closely monitoring the world over how it treats employees facing increased orders during the virus crash.

But the unions said in a joint statement that they and management had "agreed on conditions to resume the activity of the six warehouses located on French territory from May 19".

"The recovery will be gradual and will be based on volunteering," added the press release.

The specific conditions will be resolved at a meeting on Monday.

Last month, an appeals court upheld a decision that significantly reduced Amazon's operations and ordered management to review the security measures.

Meanwhile, the court said that only digital products, office equipment, groceries, medical and personal care products could be delivered.

But Amazon said it was impossible to comply with the order and has closed the six sites completely since mid-April, although it has retained full payment for employees.

The CFDT union said that the result of the resulting negotiation with Amazon was "an important step in adapting this company to the culture of our country, its standards and the CFDT requirements for a place of sustainable and dignified work ".
