Google Duo will soon allow up to 32 participants in group video calls

Google Duo will soon be increasing the number of participants allowed in a group video call, Google confirmed in a message. The report cites the company as saying that Duo will soon allow 32 participants to join a group call. The development comes at a time when people around the world are heavily using video chat tools due to the coronavirus pandemic. Another new feature which is now planned is the new AR effects which correspond to the user's facial expressions. With the many recent updates, Google will give fierce competition to competitors like Zoom and Facebook.

According to report By Android Police, Google confirmed to the publication that Google Duo will soon support group calls with up to 32 people. Currently, the platform allows up to 12 participants in a group video call that went from eight participants in March. As a reminder, group video calls on Google Duo started with up to 4 participants in April 2019.

Although Google previously stated that Google Duo will soon be increasing the participant limit, the amount was unclear. The complaint of 32 participants was also reiterated in a promotional email.

In the promotional email (via the report), Google also promises new AR effects on Duo calls that will change based on the user's facial expressions. Google Duo already supports AR effects, but they do not change with the expression of the user.

At the moment, it is not known when the new features will be implemented in Google Duo. However, it's safe to assume that the new updates will be arriving soon as Google has started sending promotional emails about them. Gadgets 360 also contacted Google for more details.

At the same time, Google recently announced that Duo users will soon be able to make group calls via the web version of the platform. Google had announced that the new functionality will be rolled out in the coming weeks and that the preview of the functionality will first be available in the Chrome web browser. Additionally, Google is adding a familiar mode to the Duo app. The mode allows users to doodle during video calls and try out fun effects and skins.

With the new updates, Google hopes to offer tough competitions to competitors like Zoom and Facebook during the coronavirus pandemic. A report recently suggested that India accounted for the largest number of Zoom app downloads in April despite multiple security warnings from government and others.
