After receiving several complaints, the Delhi police started a process to verify that vehicle owners had issued e-challans incorrectly. Once you are fined by the traffic police, you will receive an SMS to your registered cell phone number with the details of the offense. You can then choose to pay the fine or contest the fine and plead guilty.

An incorrect challan can be challenged virtually, directly from the web portal instead of going to court. Follow the steps below to challenge your Delhi Police traffic challan.

  1. Open your browser and go to https://delhitrafficpolice.nic.in/notice/pay-notice.
  2. Enter your vehicle number or mobile phone number here.
  3. On the next screen, enter the OTP received on your phone.
  4. You will now see all the challans sent to you including the date, image, notification and amount of the violation.
  5. In addition, you can also see the links to pay challan and request complaints.
  6. Click on Apply down To complain for the challan you want to challenge.
  7. Then enter the details of the claim requested. Enter OTP and click Submit .
  8. Then select the reason for the challan’s dispute, for example your license plate does not match the picture on the portal, someone was using a fake license plate, or if your vehicle was stolen.
  9. Finally, click on Submit to file the complaint.

Once you file the complaint, it will be checked and verified if your complaint is correct. If you are not the offender or have received an unfair fine, the challan will be removed.

Tips for avoiding challan or harassment from the traffic police

You have to be extra careful when driving on Indian roads. Here are some general tips to help you avoid harassment and unnecessary challans.

  • Always be aware of the rules of the road. Drive below the speed limit, especially in areas with speed cameras.
  • You can refuse to show documents to the police or to anyone below the rank of the ASI.
  • You can view physical documents or a digital copy in the DigiLocker or mParivahan app; both are legal.
  • Just an asst. The Deputy Inspector, Deputy Police Inspector and Police Inspector are authorized to issue receipts and collect payment.
  • Agents or senior agents cannot issue challan, they can only record the violation.
  • If the officer threatens you with a fine, ask for a receipt. They will probably let you go because they are not allowed to.
  • The traffic police can only issue challans if they are carrying a challan book or an E-challan machine.
  • Always check the challan check before paying a challan in cash; it will contain the exact amount of the challan, the offense, the date, the name and the signature of the policy offer, etc.
