Twitter, Facebook, Reddit and a group that represents the main Internet companies supported two groups of documentary films who challenged Trump 2019 Rules of Administration which require that almost all American visitors disclose information about social media users from the past five years.

The Department of Justice has argued in court documents that:

“The information obtained from social media profiles can be used to determine the activity, links or intention that could justify refusing the visa, including criminal acts.”

The State Department says the rules were inspired by the 2017 Trump Order requiring a thorough verification of visa applications. He had previously collected contact information, travel history, family information and previous addresses.

The department receives annually more than 14 million applicants. The only travelers exempt from social media rules are diplomatic and official travelers.
