PlayStation boss hints at Game Pass-style service in the works for PS5

It looks like Sony may have an answer for Game Pass after all.

Over time, the offer and value of the subscription service has become harder to ignore, but Sony has never offered a similar option to PlayStation owners.

Well, that could change soon, as Jim Ryan, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment suggested.

Ryan spoke to a Russian psychic TASS on the prospects for the PS5 in the country and the unusual challenges the team faced building the PS5 in a global pandemic.

Ryan was asked about PlayStation’s competition with Microsoft and what he thinks are Sony’s points of differentiation.

“[Console wars] It’s not a term that I use or really like, ”Ryan told the Russian agency.

“For me, it’s great that there is competition. I think it makes us work harder. It keeps us from becoming complacent. It’s great that the consumer has a choice. I think it’s wonderful.

Asked directly about Xbox Game Pass and if Sony has a response to the popular service, Ryan made an interesting reveal.

“Actually, there is some news coming up, but not today,” Ryan said. “We have PlayStation Now, which is our subscription service, and it’s available in different markets.”

It’s unclear what it will refer to here, but it’s unlikely to be the recently announced PlayStation Plus collection, as it’s just an added bonus to PlayStation Plus.

If Sony is really working on its own version of Game Pass, don’t expect it to include its first-party exclusives on day one as Xbox as well. Sony has repeatedly rejected this idea, seeing the practice as “unsustainable” at one point and calling its internal versions too “clean and pure” to exist on one subscription service to another.
