Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize has reported that South Africa has now surpassed 14 000 Covid-19 infections. In a statement issued by the Health Ministry on Saturday, Mkhize commented that over 800 new cases had been recorded. “As of today, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in South Africa is 14 355 with 831 new cases identified in the last 24-hour cycle of testing.”
The Western Cape province continues to observe the highest number of infections nationwide and spiked to 8 404 cases, 58.5% of SA’s total cases.
The Eastern Cape and Western Cape combined comprise 91% of the new 831 cases with the Eastern Cape recording 1 812. Mkhize also confirmed that the death toll in Mzansi continues to climb, saying that fatalities have risen to 261 deaths. “Regrettably we report a further 14 Covid-19 related deaths.
This brings the total national deaths to 261. We wish to express our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the health care workers who cared for the deceased. The total number of recoveries to date is 6 478.”
The Western Cape contributed 149 fatalities to this toll, with the Eastern Cape recording 32.
President Cyril Ramaphosa is currently engaging in consultations with key stakeholders, ensuring the fastest possible migration to Level 3 lockdown.
