Royal news: Countess of Wessex to fill Meghan Markle and Prince Harry void | Royal | News

Meghan and Harry stopped being top royals at the end of March and are currently living in Los Angeles. Speaking to the Daily Mirror Karen Sugarman, executive vice-president of Shooting Star Children’s Hospices, suggested Sophie, the Countess of Wessex, could help restore the royal family after its recent troubles.

Sophie married Prince Edward, the Queen’s youngest child, in 1999.

The couple have two children, Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn.

Sophie supports a number of charities including the Shooting Star Children’s Hospices, which support 700 critically ill children.

Ms Sugarman said: “I’ve heard Sophie being called the royal’s family’s secret weapon and I can see why, but to us she is simply our guardian angel.

“It’s never about the so-called PR opportunity for her and the way I have seen her interact with each child and family on her visits, radiating warmth and kindness and really caring about what we do, means an awful lot.

“We are so lucky to have her involved.”

Sophie met her future husband in 1987 whilst working for Capital Radio in London.

The couple announced their engagement 12 years later.

“Sophie couldn’t have been nicer.

“She arrived without fanfare, rolled up her sleeves and got stuck in.

“She had time for everybody and just wanted to help out, very unassuming but selflessly dedicated and just beautiful both inside and out.”

Other charities the Countess is involved with include the Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict Initiative, National Autistic Society and International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness.

Jane Harris, from the National Autistic Society, also sang Sophie’s praises.

Speaking to the Mirror she asserted: “What is wonderful about the Countess is, it’s never about her – she is unassuming but selflessly dedicated.

“She isn’t interested in the sound of her own voice, she is only interested in meeting autistic children and their families.

“I’ve been in awe of her selfless dedication to us and we hope it continues for many more years.”

Meghan and Harry shocked the world in January by announcing their plan to step down as senior members of the royal family.

The couple said they aimed to become “financially independent” and would divide their time between North America and Britain.
